Fallacies of reversal

This is a meta-category for various fallacies in which the reversal of an otherwise legitimate process plays a significant role. These fallacies are discussed in other categories and are listed here solely to group them together from this perspective.

• Various fallacies of abstraction are essentially based on a reversal of the relationship between abstraction and the reality from which it is abstracted:
  • The Ontological fallacy consists in inferring the existence of the signified thing from the existence of a name or concept.
  • The Procrustean fallacy refers to the reversal of the relationship between the model and reality. In practical terms, this means attempting to adapt reality to the model, rather than the other way round.
