Verdinglichung
German term that can be directly translated as “made into a thing”. It can refer to:
Reification – the (mis-)understanding of an abstract concept as a concrete object;
Note: The term “Verdinglichung ” is used in the context of Marxist theory as the “objectification” of humans in the context of industrialisation. However, the most common English translation in this specific context is “reification ”, a term that is used on this site to describe a different (albeit related) phenomenon.
For the Marxist usage of the term, therefore see: Objectification (of human beings) .
