Appeal to tradition

A variation on the appeal to false authority, where the “authority” in this case is a tradition or custom.

Traditionally, a woman’s place is at home by the hearth.
That should not be changed, which is why women should not pursue a career.

Even though it has indeed long been a tradition (at least among certain demographic groups) for women to take on the role of housewife and mother, this is not a valid argument for why things should still be handled in this way in a changing society.
