Antecedent (logic)

In a statement of type “if A, then B” (subjunction), the term that follows the “if”.

For example:

If it rains [then] the road gets wet.

In this statement, “it rains” is the antecedent and “the road gets wet” is the consequent.

The term “antecedent”comes from the Latin term “antecedens”, which means “that which precedes”.
