====== Hypostatisation ======

Another word for certain forms of //[[abstraction:reification|reification]].//

The term “hypostatisation” is derived from the ancient Greek <i :grc-Latn>hypóstasis</i> [<span :grc>ὑπόστασις</span>], which actually means “standing beneath”, but can also be translated as “underlying” or “substance”. //Hypostatisation// therefore refers to the process of giving something substance.

**Note:** The term “hypostatisation” has a similar meaning in a religious context, but one that must be clearly distinguished from this, namely the “objectification” of divine //aspects// into a separate deity. For example, in a Christian context, the concepts of “[[wp>Holy Spirit in Christianity|Holy Spirit]]” as well as the [[wp>Holy Trinity|Holy Trinity]] can be regarded as such //hypostasisations//.
